Why We Need Post-Quantum Cryptography (or Quantum-Safe Algorithms)

Most current encryption methods are computationally secure. While we know how to break them, the good news is that it would take a computer around 300 trillion years to break RSA-2048-bit encryption. So, we are good, right?

Well, perhaps we were, until Peter Shor discovered a new algorithm that would bring this down to around 10 seconds! The algorithm would however need a hypothetical device called a “Quantum Computer”. Such a device didn’t exist back then and still doesn’t exist today, but experts believe that a “cryptographic relevant quantum computer” (CRQC) will exist within the next decade.

This is why NIST started a project on upgrading vulnerable encryption methods back in 2015 and after working on this for more than eight years, they have just released three finalized standards:

New NIST Standards Are Only Months Away. Take Immediate Action to Secure Your Future with Post-Quantum Cryptography

Quantum security becomes a more tangible and critical concern in 2024. New post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) standards are expected in the new year from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). We believe this pending release signals both the technological maturity of the solutions and the government’s acknowledgment of the severity of the quantum threat. It's only months away from the release of the standards and quantum readiness will not be a trivial undertaking. Here’s what you need to know as you plan for the migration to post-quantum cryptography.

More and more people in cybersecurity are being diagnosed every day with QRDD. In an informal poll of cybersecurity leaders and teams, respondents reported knowing at least one person displaying signs of Quantum Resistance and Denial Disorder (QRDD). So what is it and why is it such a cause for concern in the community?

Is the Sky Really Falling?

To many, the term “quantum computing” equates to a world of new possibilities. What started as a theoretical curiosity is now touted as the future of IT. With quantum, there will be lightning fast processing of information and computers will be able to answer problems previously thought of as unsolvable.

The Enigma Code, Zimmerman’s Telegram, the Copiale Cipher, and now … RSA? As with previously “uncrackable codes,” was the 46-year-old RSA public-key encryption system finally cracked? Chinese researchers have claimed their universal quantum algorithm based on Schnorr’s algorithm can reduce the quantum resources needed to break RSA encryption, presenting a near-term possibility that Quantum Computing will break RSA encryption.

Over the past several decades, cryptography has evolved tremendously, yet breaches still occur, even in environments that were thought to be crypto secure. These exploitations have multiple causes, but weak encryption keys are one of the most pervasive factors. Fortunately, there are solutions to this problem. Let’s dive in.

In our last blog post, we discussed the underlying importance of entropy as cryptography advances in terms of requirements and capabilities. One of the most significant advances will be Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), and here we’ll discuss some facets of PQC that organizations need to understand.
